The Change in names Abram and Sarai

It is 13 years since the birth of ishmael when Abram is 90 years old that he is told by God that He will make a convenant with him; to initiate the act of circumcision and that his name will be changed fro Abram to Abraham and that sarai will change her name to Sarah. In the section (See hyperlink the mist, Adam, truth and the two trees) we saw the significance of the 1-4 ratio in both the second story of the creation and its importance in the relationship between man and God. Of course 1-4 = 5 and simply by seeing our hand we can see the 1-4 ratio in the four fingers and the thumb of our hand. The ‘Hand’ is the symbol of the letter yod י in the Hebrew alphabet (See hyperlink Table of numerical values).

Consider the text in Genesis 2:4, just at the conclusion of the first tale of creation and the beginning of the second tale of creation. The verse reads:

‘These were the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord made the earth and the heavens.

The term when they were created in Hebrew is ‘behibaram’ בהבראם spelt beth-heh-beth-resh-aleph-mem, However if you have access to a Hebrew Bible you will note that the letter ‘heh’ of behibaram’ בהבראם is written with a miniaturised character.

This is not an accident or misprint, and just as the large ב of the first letter of the Bible is printed as such for a reason (See hyperlink Why is the first letter beth?). throughout the text of the Hebrew Bible one occasionally finds a letter in the beginning, middle or end of a word written in miniature or sometimes in large print. When the Bible was first written in approximately 7th Century BCE it was carefully copied by scribes and overseen by Rabbis who ensured that no error was made in the writing of the text. Indeed even, and especially, today Torah scrolls, hand written prayers and texts from the Bible undergo a vigilant process from the preparation of the parchment to the writing of the script. No Biblical script is acceptable unless it has been carefully examined and approved by authorised Rabbi. Hence the miniaturised or enlarged characters in the Hebrew text are not only something intentional but also has been carried down through the ages since the Bible was first written.

Let us examine the reason for the miniaturised heh in Behibaram. The letter heh has the value of 5 and just as our hand is composite of a thumb and 4 fingers so the five is composite of 1+4, The 5 is the ‘crystal of creation’. It means that as shown in the second story of creation (see hyperlink the mist, Adma, truth and the two trees) the mist or ed אד with its 1-4 format signified the beginning of the act of creation, so it summation, the 5, is the cause of that creation.

In the case of the term behibaram the meaning when they were created, such as is written in the English translation of the text, can be reinterpreted to mean ‘with the heh He created them’ where:

be ב= with,

hi ה= heh,

baramברם = created them.

This means the act of creation was by the heh, the crystal of creation, the 5, using the 1-4 format through God, the 1, the phenomenal world was created.

So why is the heh is reduced in size? It is because it is an embryonic heh or an embryonic act of creation at the beginning of the process of development of the universe that has not yet come to its full fruition and still awaiting the evolution of man and development to accomplish the full task.

So who is the man who will initiate the process of development to bring the world to its full fruition? Let us look again at the term behibaram. If we look at the Hebrew for behibaram בהבראם is simply an anagram for the name Abraham אברהם except that the be, ב which is only a prefix meaning with, is left out.

If we turn to Genesis 17, we find that Abraham was originally called Abram and his wife Sarah was originally called Sarai and God instructed that their names be changed. The change in name came at the time 13 years after the birth of Ishmael, when Abram is 90 years old and God announced to Abram that a son will be born to him and his wife and that he and all his household should be circumcised.

And Abram fell on his face; and God talked with him, saying: As for me, behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations: Neither shall your name any more be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made you: And I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come out of you: And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your seed after you in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God to you, and to your seed after you: And I will give to you, and to your seed after you, the land where you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God: And God said to Abraham, You shall keep my covenant therefore, you, and your seed after you in their generations: This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your seed after you; Every male child among you shall be circumcised: And you shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you: And he who is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every male child in your generations, he who is born in the house, or bought with money from any stranger, who is not of your seed: He who is born in your house, and he who is bought with your money, must be circumcised; and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant: And the uncircumcised male child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant: And God said to Abraham, As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be: And I will bless her, and give you a son also of her; and I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her: (Genesis 3:3-16)

In his former name Abram is spelt אברם and Abraham is spelt אברהם i.e. in the change of name is a heh ה is added. Similarly in the case of Sarah, her original name was Sarai spelt שרי and with the instruction from God it is changed to Sarah spelt שרה. Effectively a yod י has been taken out of Sarai’s name and replaced by a heh ה. This time it is a normal sized heh and not diminished as in behibaram.

As we know from the Table of numerical values (See Hyperlink Table of numerical values) yod is equal to a value of 10 and heh is equal to a value of 5. Hence the yod is equal to 2 hehs. What has effectively happened in the change of names of Sarah and Abraham is that the yod composite in the name Sarai has been split into two hehs of which one heh is placed in the name of Abraham and the other heh is placed in the name of Sarai.

It is this insertion of the heh into both the names of Abraham and Sarah that provide the seed and crystal of creation that allows Abraham and Sarah to give birth to Isaac (see hyperlink the 8 and the circumcision).

The splitting of the yod into 2 hehs is reminiscent of the relationship between the letter aleph and the unspoken word for God YHVH, where the aleph with its composite of yod-vav-yod יוי evolves into yod-heh-vav-heh יהוה which allows the act of creation to take place (see hyperlink 1, 10, 100, 1000, 26, 13). Effectively the change of names of Abraham and Sarah in order to produce their son Isaac is the embodiment of the Act of Creation of the universe described in Genesis 1 and 2.

It should also be noted that once Abram’s name is changed to Abraham and Sarai’s name to Sarah there is no further reference to the former names throughout the Bible: once the seed is set there is no reversal. This is unlike the case of Jacob when even though his name is changed to Israel, there is frequent reversion to the former name (See hyperlink The encounter of Jacob and Esau).

The sum of Abraham’s name, 248, are the total number of positive actions that man has to perform to build his existence in this life, as defined in the Tanach. These 248 positive actions are called the ‘male aspect’ and are crystallised in the skeleton of the body, as defined by the number of bones. As such they represent the positive actions as ordained by God carried out through action and motion of the body.

Over and against these 248 positive actions are the 365 negative actions to be avoided and represent the ‘female aspect’ of the body as defined in the flesh.
