Sodom and Gomorrah and 1000

Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven: (Genesis 19:24)

The question arises – why does the incident of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah take place as an interlude between the announcement to Abraham and Sarah of the birth of Isaac and the birth of Isaac?

Moreover it takes place shortly after God has shown the promised Land of Canaan to Abraham where he placed the altar between Bethel and H’Ai (See hyperlink Bet El and H’ai). And indeed as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is taking place, Abraham is standing in the same place before God as he sees the smoke rising from Sodom and Gomorrah.

The answer is found in the term Brimstone and Fire.

Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven. (Genesis: 19:24)

And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he stood before the Lord: And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace: (Genesis 19:27-28).

In Hebrew the term for ‘brimstone and fire’ is ‘gafrit ve esh’ spelt: gimmel-peh-resh-yod-taf-vav-aleph-shin גפרית ואש with a numerical value of:

3+6+80+10+200+400+6+1+300 = 1000.

Apart from use in the episode of Sodom and Gomorrah, the term is repeated several times in the Bible in the books of Isaiah, Job, Ezekiel and Psalms as a punishment for those who are wicked in the sight of God, including the Jewish people (See below).

The only other place in the Bible where a phrase adds up to the value of 1000 is the phrase Sihon king of the Amorites and Og, king of Bashan (Numbers 32:33), where in Hebrew the phrase is:

Sihon melech ha Amori סיחן מלך האמרי = samech-yod-chet-nun mem-lamed-chaf-heh-aleph-mem-resh-yod = 60-10-8-50 40-30-20 5-1-40-200-10 =474

and

Og melech ha Bashan עוג מלך הבשן = ayin-vav-gimmel-mem-lamed-caph-heh-beth-shin-nun

=70-6-3 40-30-20 5-2-300-50 =526

Total = 1000

The battle of the Children of Israel against Sihon and Og represents the last and ultimate battle and obstacle to be overcome before the Children of Israel enter the Promised Land. So what is the link between Sodom and Gomorrah and the battle of Sihon and Og.

The number 1000 is eleph in Hebrew. It is the same spelling as the letter aleph, where aleph has a value of 1. As we see in the (See hyperlink table of numerical values 1000 represents entry into the level of the supra-spiritual world.

This strange interlude of the Sodom and Gomorrah occurring between the conception of Isaac lying in the womb of Sarah and his subsequent birth is to confirm the total destruction of evil as represented by Sodom and Gomorrah before Isaac enters into this world. Isaac is the first of the Hebrew race to be a product of a circumcised conception and a result of the change of names of Abram and Sarai. He is pure in the true essence of the word inasmuch that he was born out of pure seed. So too must the world also be pure to receive him. The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah symbolises the destruction of all evil so that he may enter the supra-spiritual world. It is the purification of the land prior to the birth of the second patriarch and the purification of the land just after God shows to Abraham extent of the Promised Land that will be given to his descendants.

The same is the case of the final battle with Sihon, King of the Amorites and Og, King of Bashan before the entry into the Promised Land. The two kings were the ultimate evil and wickedness in the world and had to be destroyed in order to prepare the way for the Children of Israel to enter supra-spiritual world of the 1000. Effectively the battle was a process of purifying the Earth and eradication of wickedness before entering a new world of the Promised Land.

Cabalists understand that in total, there are 1000 worlds and that 974 worlds have already passed and a remaining 26 worlds remain – 26 being the gematrical value of the name of God יהוה.
